On Friday, Sept. 11, Phoenix Councilwoman Thelda Williams greeted approximately 100 residents and their four-legged companions during a ribbon cutting for Deem Hills Dog Park, part of Deem Hills Community Park.

The dog park spans two acres and features separate leash-free zones for large and small dogs, and carefully planned amenities like 30 shade trees, natural turf, K9-friendly drinking fountains, LED lighting and concrete seating walls. Fencing and landscaping materials blend with the surrounding desert to preserve the picturesque vista.

“I’m excited that this dog park is lit. When you work full time, you tend to come in the evenings and a lot of the other dog parks don’t have lights. This park is beautiful and you can’t beat the sunset view,” said Betsy Griffin.

The park, maintained by the City of Phoenix, complements the existing 40-acre community park, which includes a playground, soccer fields, a basketball court, hiking trails and ramadas.

Deem Hills is the city’s eighth dog park and the second to open in the last month. Esteban Dog Park, at 32nd Street and Roeser Road, opened Aug. 22. Look for another dog park at Cesar Chavez Park, 35th Avenue and Baseline Road, to open later this fall.
